On June 29th, at 12 pm local time, 176 brave riders departed Florence for the grand départ of the 2024 Tour de France. A blisteringly hot and challenging stage opened this year's edition of this iconic sporting event. Le Tour de France has a remarkable history and we here at PSP will endeavor to convey the singular spirit of the race while giving you our impressions of the sponsorship landscape that surrounds it.
Stage 1 (Florence > Rimini, 206km)
The opening stage of le Tour de France 2024 was a hilly test through Tuscany as the battle for le maillot jaune kicked off in neighboring Italy for the first time ever. In the closing stages, cycling fans of all nations joined together to urge Romain Bardet, one of the most famous French competitors of the last decade, across the finish line first to earn his first ride in yellow in what he's announced will be his final Tour. As the peloton bore down on him and his young teammate, Frank van den Broek, France collectively sighed in relief and jumped for joy as they finally crossed the line.
Team dsm–firmenich PostNL played their cards perfectly, sending the young Dutchman out in the early breakaway to eventually be joined by his team leader Bardet. Come the end of the race, the two men cruised to victory together. There was no doubt about who would claim the stage and the first yellow jersey of this year's Tour. Bardet pointed to his lieutenant in thanks and they celebrated in tandem. One might expect the Dutch team with the Dutch sponsors might want to promote their up-and-coming star on this occasion, but the value of a popular French rider cannot be overstated during the Tour. Especially given that this will Bardet's final attempt at the race, this accomplishment had incredible sentimental value to him and his nation. Team dsm–firmenich PostNL organized an inspired race plan and their experienced leader joined forces with a future star to remind us of the beauty of le Tour de France. This event is always a fascinating stage for sponsors to promote their brands and products. For 20 more days of racing, we will cover various instances of inspired sponsorship strategy, but the opening stage will be tough to beat. In the end, the sponsors follow the fans, and the gaze of the world was firmly glued on the storybook tale that played out in Tuscany. Vive le Tour.
